llms.txt: The Cheat Sheet You Can Hand an AI
Technical meaning. llms.txt is a plain-text file placed at the root of a website that gives AI language models a concise, curated summary of the site: who or what it is about, the most important pages, and key facts. It is a newer, proposed standard, written specifically for large language models (the “LLM” in the name).
In plain English. A normal website is built for people, with menus, images, and pages scattered around. An llms.txt file is like handing an AI a one-page cheat sheet that says, “Here is exactly who we are and what matters most.” Instead of making the AI piece your story together, you hand it the story.
Why it matters. AI tools are more confident and more accurate when the facts are spelled out plainly. A clear llms.txt makes it easier for an AI to describe you correctly, in your own words, rather than guessing from bits and pieces it finds elsewhere.
How it shows up in real life. Almost no small business has one yet, so it is optional, not a failure if it is missing. But it is a low-effort way to get ahead: a short, honest summary file that tells AI assistants the truth about you before they have to assume it.
